Art meets community in Puzzle Mural
By immersive visual artist Mason Fetzer
I’m Mason Fetzer, a painter and muralist with extensive background in teaching and community-building. Above all, I love to see people creating together.
That’s why for the past ten years, I have developed and run Puzzle Mural: a community-centered art project where participants of all ages and backgrounds create a large-scale mural, one piece at a time.
Here’s how it works:
1. Your community members (small groups or large events – it’s entirely customizable!) paint one square each, according to a provided example.
2. Participants’ panels are gathered over the course of your event, festival, or conference.
3. Mason and team mount the squares to reveal the completed community mural in an exciting public unveiling.
4. Your organization keeps the final piece of artwork, which your community created together.
What are the applications?
Team building events
Arts festivals
Corporate offices
Community organizing
Public art projects
Immersive events
Neighborhood beautification
And more!
These images are of past Puzzle Murals from the Utah Arts Festival. There, patrons ages 2 to 81 painted simple wooden squares that transformed into vibrant backdrops, coloring the festival experience for all who attended. As I look back at these murals, I remember the faces that painted them (including my own kids, who’ve been working on Puzzle Murals since they could hold a paintbrush), and how epic it has been to watch those faces react with joy when they see how the whole puzzle comes together.
I’d love to bring this project to your organization. Reach out and let’s chat about how to make it a perfect fit for your community.
